Tom Price resigns as Health and Human Services secretary
By Adam Kelsey Sep 29, 2017
“Secretary of Health and Human Services Thomas Price offered his resignation earlier today and the president accepted,” read a statement from White House press secretary Sarah Sanders, adding that Trump intends to designate Don Wright, the current deputy assistant secretary for health and director of the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion as acting secretary.
The revelation about Price’s trips drew widespread criticism from Democrats and an investigation was launched last week by the HHS Office of Inspector General. Price took as many as 26 private flights and flew on military planes on trips to Europe and Africa at an estimated cost to taxpayers of over $1 million, according to Politico.

Tom Price apologizes for taking private jets and says he’ll reimburse taxpayers — but there’s a catch
By: Allan Smith Sep. 28, 2017
Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price apologized Thursday for taking chartered flights, said he will reimburse taxpayers for his expenses, and promised to fly commercially in the future, multiple outlets reported.
“The taxpayers won’t pay a dime for my seat on those planes,” Price said in a statement.
The statement came as Price has become engulfed in a controversy over his frequent use of chartered flights, which can cost taxpayers more than $25,000 each. Even President Donald Trump has publicly scolded Price for his flying habits, which have drawn scrutiny this month.

Tom Price cares about government spending. Except when he doesn’t.
By Gregory Krieg Sept 29, 2017
In late January, not long after President Donald Trump took office, his Department of Health and Human Services pulled the plug on $5 million in Obamacare advertising — only days before open enrollment for the program closed.
“We aren’t going to continue spending millions of taxpayers’ dollars promoting a failed government program,” a spokesman said at the time. “Once an assessment was made, we pulled back the most expensive and least efficient part of this massive ad campaign, which was set to run over the weekend.”

Democrats Flew at Taxpayer Expense and Almost Nobody Cared
By Joel B. Pollak 29 Sep 2017
In 2012, reports emerged that Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta had charged the taxpayers at least $800,000 dollars for flights home to California from Washington, DC, every weekend. He “billed the government $32,000 per private flight home,” the Atlantic noted at the time, but only reimbursed the taxpayers $632 per flight. While he “regretted” the cost, Panetta said that he had no intention of stopping the flights. And — in his defense — he was following the procedures required by law since the George W. Bush administration for Cabinet officials’ flights.
