Hurricane Maria Response and Relief Operations Underway Release date: September 21, 2017 The supplies for Puerto Rico were on the island BEFORE Hurricane Maria struck. U.S. Coast Guard personnel and assets bunker down Sept. 20 in Puerto Rico in order to respond and provide relief for Hurricane Maria. FEMA-loaded vessels with more than 1.3 million meals, 2 million liters of water, 30 generators and 6,000 cots are en route to St. Thomas, awaiting port opening and clearance.
